L.A. Stands for LAST

It has been a rough year for Don Mattingly, who has been trying to lull a highly-touted and highly-paid Dodgers team out of the doldrums of last place.  After a 5-2 loss to the Brewers on Wednesday night, Mattingly criticized his team, saying they lack fight and competitiveness.  That was after they lost 12 of their last 17 games and dropping to a dismal 19-26 record.

Speculation immediately began on Mattingly’s relationship with GM Ned Colletti and his job security, but Colletti agreed with Mattingly.  Sources say Mattingly is in no danger of being fired.  He is taking desperate measures to revamp the struggling team.  He benched struggling outfielder, Andre Ethier, and he held a meeting with Colletti and the rest of his coaching staff until 1 AM, although they had a game against the Brewers at noon the next day.

Injuries and inconsistent play have hampered the Dodgers, who were favored to compete with the Giants for the NL West title.  Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp, two of the league’s highest-paid players, have struggled.  The team’s ace pitcher, Chad Billingsley, will need elbow surgery and is out for the season.
